A New Attitude

“The fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, self-control…” Galatians 5:19-26 (NASV)

In 1985, Patti Labelle musically proclaimed she had a “new attitude.” Patti went on to state that she “tidied up my point of view- I got a new attitude.” What type of attitude are you walking around with? Are you patient or quick-tempered; loving or hateful; supportive or jealous? We can wear many faces but the truth is that each attitude mask we wear is developed within the heart. Whatever is in your heart and mind will result in how you act. How do you want people to perceive you? First, you must reflect upon your attitude and decide if you need and want a “new” one. After you do this, your life will began to transform for the better. Believe me, I know.

Renew Your Mind!

…be transformed by the renewing of your mind… (Romans 12:2 NASV)

Depression affects millions of people in the U.S. Symptoms of depression can include: feeling hopeless and worthless, irritability, body aches, and lack of motivation. There are many more symptoms of depression and it looks different for each person. Situations such as losing a job, death of a loved one, financial problems, and relationship issues can cause a person to slip into depression.

I believe there is a solution to overcoming depression. One solution involves the transformation of your mind which ultimately changes your behavior. What this means is you need a new way of thinking and living. For example, let’s look at the Prodigal Son (Luke 15: 11-32). He probably experienced depression as a result of his irresponsible decisions. Even though he had a great time spending all of his money, in the end he found himself alone with filthy pigs. The so-called friends that helped him party and waste his wealth were gone; he had abandoned his support system, and had no more self-love. I imagine his thoughts led him to a moment of hopelessness and guilt regretting his decisions and behaviors. The Prodigal Son had his ‘ah-ha’ moment that snapped him out of despair and lifted his mood. An ‘ah-ha’ moment requires insight. I’m not sure how long this process took for him, but it required him to ponder on his situation and make a decision to change. As a result, he returned home to his support system. You have the same opportunity as he did. Coming out of depression is not an easy thing to do, but it is worth all the hard work. The reward is inner peace and happiness and I believe you deserve it.
